Contactless radar-based vital signs detection for mass casualty triage

Helsinki, Finland Building MVPBusiness ID: 3526330-2

Summary

Mass casualty incidents overwhelm first responders with a simple but critical bottleneck: identifying who is still alive takes time, physical contact, and puts personnel at risk. RUBICON is a handheld radar device that detects breathing and heartbeat contactlessly, outputting vital signals in seconds without touching the patient. The primary customer is military and emergency medical services.

Problem

In mass casualty incidents, victim classification is performed manually, one patient at a time, requiring physical contact to detect vital signs. The most widely used classification algorithm, START, has an overall accuracy of just 0.73 (95% CI 0.67–0.78), and a 2022 meta-analysis concluded that a more accurate method should be urgently pursued. Manual carotid pulse checks, the standard for confirming circulation, have approximately 55% specificity, meaning a present pulse is missed nearly half the time.

Solution

RUBICON eliminates the need for physical contact in vital signs detection. The device uses a radar to detect micro-movements on the chest caused by respiration and cardiac activity, showing vital signs in seconds

Competitive advantage

Existing solutions require physical contact, trained personnel, and time that mass casualty scenarios do not allow. RUBICON's advantage is the combination of FMCW radar sensitivity, a binary output designed for speed rather than clinical depth, and a form factor built for field use.
